Intro:

Hello and welcome to the Return of the RunRunLive Podcast after last week’s venture into the feminine genre.  I was shooting for something inspirational that you ladies could share with newbies to get them out there, because everyone knows that the is no force as irresistible as a broad migration of empowered women.

That’s what I was shooting for but it came off a little maudlin and pandering! But, hey can’t win if you don’t try!  I also owe you a Chicago marathon show.  I have the audio I just have to find the time to put it together.

I’m recording from the Dallas Fort Worth Airport today.  Was at a conference down here.

We’re back in the comfort zone this week with Episode 196.  We are talking with our old friend Kevin from just finish who comnpleted the grand slam of ultra-endurance races this summer.  Quite a journey.  Proving again that ordinary people can do whatever they set their minds to.

I haven’t done much since we last talked. I went to see doctor Hester and he said my heel was much better.  I didn’t tell him I snuck in the Chicago Marathon.  He told me to start working in some elliptical, but I tried 10 minutes and the heel PF flared right up.

I’m cranking up my cross training.  Trying to increase my pool, bike, weightlifting and pool running to a duration and intensity level that will let me start losing some weight.  Even with the plant-based diet I’m still putting on about 2 pounds a week not running.  This is even though I’m doing cross training 3-5 times a week. Entropy fights hard.

I felt seriously like a stuffed sausage when I had to get into my fitted dress shirts this week.  I don’t think they were thinking Sumo wrestlers when they said ‘athletic cut’.

Buddy is fine.  He’s getting a little chubby too.  I’m walking him but he’s not getting the same exercise we usually get. He’s getting his winter coat and shedding big hunks of fur.

I volunteered at races the last two weekends.  I worked a water stop at the BayState Marathon and helped out at the Groton Town Forest races.

It’s getting cold up here.  I took the air conditioners out and replaced the screen doors with storm windows this weekend.  I didn’t get a chance to turn my garden in, but it needs work.  I had a good year but I’m sharing my produce with a hungry woodchuck.  He got most of my tomatoes, and all of my peppers.  What kind of animal eats jalapenos?  That’s just not right.

So far he’s left me some kale and swiss chard, but he ate up all my beets.  My garden fence has become quite dilapidated and does not serve as much of a deterrent any more.  In the spring I’ll have to rebuild it.  I’m switching over to more perennials. I’ve got some nice sage

Take a deep breath of that cold, crisp air.  On with the Show!

Outro:

That’s it you have run in your sleep on that long, dark, mountain trail of the soul to the end of yet another RunRunLive Podcast episode 196 in the can.

Next week we have Lisa the Duathlete who had an inelastic interaction with an SUV as she was getting ready to go the world championships.   I also had a chat with the guy who uses his GPS to draw those hearts in Tokyo, you may have seen him in Competitor magazine.

The bad thing about having a chronic injury is that you get a little blue and you start to lose that fitness that took years to build.  The good thing is that you start to get really excited about having the opportunity to train again.

I was reading some of the stories from my book into audio and some of them deal with the time when I crashed my truck and trashed my patella.  I didn’t know if I would ever come back from that.  When I did I had a whole new perspective on just how lucky I am, how lucky we are to be able to do what we do, at any speed, at any level it is a gift and you need to appreciate it.

New-Outro

As I was squeezing into my fitted shirts this week and noticing ho uncomfortably tight the necks were and how uncomfortably constraining the belly-bulge was and how that dress belt was now one loop larger – I felt uncomfortable.

But I think this discomfort is not a bad thing.  This discomfort means that I have internalized that other me that fits into my shirts and that other me is my norm, my official self-image.  That’s a good thing.

It is a mental tool that I have to use to keep my ‘normal’ in a certain range.  I used to be 30 pounds heavier, when I started this adventure, and I’m always amazed at how I made THAT my normal.  When I started to get skinnier it was as surprising to me as getting heavier is now because it was a change from normal.  Eventually I internalized, adjusted to and celebrated the new normal.

I had a lady get on the plane with me this week who was at least 400 pounds.  She had to go sideways down the aisle.  It was a small regional jet and she sat next to, and somewhat on top of, me.  Whenever I see folks like this I wonder what happened in their brains that they accepted this as their normal?

The truth is that it is as uncomfortable for them to change out of their normal and it is for me to change out of my normal.

The deeper truth is that they, you, I, all of us define our own ‘normal’.  Before you can change, for good or for worse, you have to accept that change.

What are you going to decide is your normal.

And, as is my normal, I will see you out there.

You can find me being normal at Twitter, Facebook, DailyMile, YouTube – and Google as cyktrussell that’s Chris yellow king tom Russell with two esses and two ells.
