It wasn’t much. It was a small, local event. It was slow by my standards. But it was a race in the sense that, unlike Boston which I saw as a ramble, I pushed the pace. Like Boston, the resulting time was slow for me, but the barbeque afterwards tasted just as juicy. It’s good to be back.

It was a marathon like no other for me. I ran my worst marathon time ever, by a considerable margin. And it was one of my most enjoyable races. This bodes well for my aged days when running competitively simply won’t be an option. There is life after obsession. But meanwhile, I got something back. I feel like a runner again.

No pressure. It’s liberating. Forecast says headwind. Who cares? When my competitive days are over (which they might already be, who knows?) I think I could enjoy this low pressure version of racing. Tomorrow is the Boston Marathon, and it just doesn’t matter.

It’s funny how a part of your life can slip away without you noticing. I spent the last two days traveling and it occurred to me that I hadn’t spent a night away from home since the fateful Wineglass Tragedy. Wanderlust is an undeniable part of my being. Getting back on the road was another step on the return to normalcy, and like the other steps, it felt good.
