Gary's Blog - Adventures and reflections of a middle-aged runner doing this for the second time in his life.

Sorry, we’ve pushed that date another 3 weeks.  And then another 2 weeks.  And then…  Call it the airline syndrome.  We’ll be underway in only 30 minutes, at which point we’ll tell you 15 more.  And so it goes with the recovery.  My foot, that is.  I’m not making any predictions on the economy.

I’ve got twisted logic about winter.  Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty I love about winter.  What’s not to love about daring the elements for a few miles, earning the respect and/or pity of passing motorists?  Still, spring is the best time of year, so I get myself there mentally as fast as possible using The 60 Day Challenge, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Marathon Mentality.

It’s ugly-like cold today, but the days are longer, the weekend was warm, and I was able to generate some good self-induced pain for the first time in months.  It’s like a spring thaw.  Normalcy is just around the corner, I can smell it.

In the past few months my life has flashed before my eyes.  Perhaps flashed isn’t quite the right word, let’s say scrolled.  With the extra time I’ve had while not running, I’ve been running a different kind of marathon, and it’s given me an interesting perspective of time and what we do with it.

It was like Groundhog Day come early.  Six more weeks, he announced.  Only it had nothing to do with the weather or the seasons, it simply meant I’m about six weeks away from being deemed healed.  Meanwhile, I’ve been granted the sweet freedom of mobility.

Hard corners feel good.  Take that exit ramp a few MPH faster than the recommended speed and feel the rubber bite (even on my rusty old rice-burner).  Yeah…  Make that final course turn in a hot sprint and put the finish line in sight.  Sweet…  Yes, hard corners feel good.  And I took one this weekend.  Very sweet, indeed.

It’s easy to be down right now.  I’m not running.  Indeed, I’m still on crutches.  I still don’t know if my toe will work again.  The economy is in the dumps.  My own employer is teetering on quarter-a-share stock (down from, uh, you don’t want to know…).  It’s ugly everywhere.  But it’s time to celebrate, and not just because W is history and I don’t have a sub-prime mortgage.&a Read More »

I was thrilled when Doctor Foot Doctor offered to supply pictures of my surgery, though I was admittedly a little apprehensive.  Fascinating or nauseating?  I’ve certainly received plenty of views on that question.  And better, I’ve heard that thanks to these pictures, my readership has extended to some interesting places!  Overall, The Surgery Show has been a great hit.

Crutches stink.  If you’ve been on them, you know this.  If not, you don’t have a clue.  You think they’re great fun.  You grab your friend’s (hopefully when he’s sitting down) and hop across the room with glee.  But when you really can’t afford to drop weight on that busted and/or patched up lower appendage, you quickly learn the truth.

I can’t make this stuff up.  While my foot is still sheathed in bandages, resembling, as my co-workers put it, a huge wrapped up meatball grinder, while I still hobble on crutches, while I consciously yearn to run, my subconscious is at it as well.  I ran a marathon last night in 2:61.  Yeah, 2:61.  Dreams are like that.
