I don't know about the rest of you, but Winter and I are not friends.  I do not like his dark frigidity and the way he blows in my face.  How rude!  Just to show him he cannot intimidate me, I sign up for a race every January.  In the past these have been races in places which are a bit nicer than Colorado Winter...  Like Florida Winter or Arizona Winter.  But this morning, I'm running a local race...the Lafayette Oatmeal Festival's Quicker Quaker 5K.

Besides the need to show Winter that I'm tough, the other reason I sign up for a January race is to keep me motivated to run over the holiday season and to start the New Year with renewed energy and fresh resolve to run faster, longer, harder!  This year it didn't work.  Something about a 5K being shorter than my typical training run, just has not gotten me hyped.  As a result, I probably did less running in December than any other months in the past 10 years combined.  Yes...I did at least 1,000,000 miles of not running.  I'm probably more prepared and in better shape not to run than I have ever been in my life.  I could SO not run this 5K today without any problem.

However, my friends that I invited along have not been training not to run.  They will probably want to go fast.  Because I'm a good friend and don't want them to feel bad that I can go so much slower, I will try and stay with them and maybe just slow down at the end, to get myself a bad time.  I mean...after all I did so little running this season that I cannot give up a personal worst, just so my friends will feel better about themselves.

When we're breakfasting later, we'll all stay and eat together. My friends won't be offended or hurt that I eat a lot more than they do.  They know there's no competition when it comes to food.  As for the race?  They may be surprised by my lack of speed, but it's time to let them know the truth.  I may even come in first place for slowest female in my age group.  Wish me luck.
